Benefits of Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding has countless benefits for babies and mums. So much so the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends colostrum, which is the milk produced at the end of pregnancy, as the perfect start for a baby.

WHO also says to get the best results feeding should start within one hour of birth and that babies should feed solely on breast milk up to age of six months - but don’t panic, starting to breastfeed your baby at any time is better than not breastfeeding at all.

Further breastfeeding benefits include:

Greater nutrition than formula milk

  • A stronger immune system
  • Increased protection against asthma, eczema and allergies
  • Help with wind, colic and digestive problems
  • Protection against serious illness like gastroenteritis - which can prove fatal to babies - and chest infections
  • Protection against illnesses in adult life like high blood pressure and obesity
  • Protection for mum from osteoporosis, ovarian cancer and breast cancer
