Charcot-Marie-Tooth Syndrome
About Charcot-Marie-Tooth Syndrome
Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome (CMT) is sometimes referred to as hereditary motor and
sensory neuropathy or peroneal muscular atrophy.
It relates to a set of inherited conditions
that cause damage to the periphery nerves which control the muscles and relay sensory
information between limbs and the brain. The most commonly affected muscles are those
below the knees and in the hands.
People with CMT can start experiencing symptoms at any time although they usually begin
during adolescence or in early adulthood. It affects both males and females.
