About Acquired Brain Injury
An acquired brain injury (ABI) is an injury caused to the brain after birth. There are a number
of means by which someone can acquire a long term brain injury including traumatic injury,
severe viral or bacterial infection, stroke, disease, tumour or aneurysm or an event that causes a lack of oxygen to the brain.
Traumatic brain injury relates to injuries acquired through falls, assaults, road traffic accidents and industrial accidents.
Both acquired and traumatic brain injury can affect anyone at any age.
