NHS Oxfordshire is working hard to redevelop the facilities at Townlands Hospital for the people of Henley and surrounding areas.

We are committed to the scheme which will keep all the services valued by local people.

On September 23 2010, NHS Oxfordshire Board approved an Outline Business Case for the project which was an exciting new milestone for the scheme.

The aim is to create a ‘health campus’ on the site which will serve the needs of Henley and the surrounding areas’ growing population.

We are working with partners such as Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Mental Health Trust and voluntary organisations to make maximum use of the development opportunities.

In particular partnership work has begun with Oxfordshire County Council to explore opportunities around OCC plans to redevelop the Chilterns End Care Home, on Greys Road, Henley. This could involve the transfer of services and resources that then share facilities on the Townlands site.

To take to project forward, a new Project Lead was appointed. Richard Darch has many years experience in delivering community hospitals and other healthcare facilities. One of his recent achievements is over seeing the building of the £34 million South Bristol Community Hospital and, more locally, for the East Oxford Health Centre on Cowley Road, Oxford.

In January 2011 a Prior Information Notice (PIN) was published. This is to let would-be developers know about the plans to re-develop Townlands Hospital and to respond with their ‘expressions of interest.’

The PIN has received a very high response rate and the Project Team is now assessing those who have shown an interest.

What happens now?

  • The second stage Outline Business case to the NHS Oxfordshire Board on March 25.
  • If approved, then the redevelopment will go out to tender
  • A shortlist will be drawn up of potential developers
  • Approval for the scheme taken to the NHS Oxfordshire Board in December

Meanwhile, we are continuing to work with the people of Henley and surrounding areas through a series of public meetings recently hosted by the Townlands Steering Group.

Map (PDF File: 7 MB)

This is a very early map of the Townland's site and how the new development might be arranged to meet the future needs and planning requirements of Henley and district.

This is only provisional at this stage and is likely to change as the project progresses. When plans become clearer we will update with a further map of the site.
