The Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Board approved the implementation of a consultant delivered model to sustain paediatrics and obstetrics at the Horton and the investment of £900k. The meeting was attended by members of the public, members of the Community Partnership Forum and Programme Board, staff from Horton and JR and local journalists.

On Wednesday 16 June, Tony Baldry secured an adjournment debate on the Horton. This minister commented on the specific solution and more generally on sustaining services at small DGHs. The transcript of the debate will be available at www.parliament.uk.

Background to the Better Healthcare Programme

In March 2008, the Independent Reconfiguration Panel (IRP) rejected proposals to change services at the Horton General Hospital in Banbury. Oxfordshire Primary Care Trust (PCT) was asked to take forward a project to ensure services are retained and developed. As a result the PCT is working with local authorities, local GPs, the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust, patients and the public in planning sustainable health services for the people of Banbury and surrounding areas at the Horton General Hospital.

Approximately 185,000 people live in the Horton General Hospital catchment area, including people living in Banbury, Bicester, Chipping Norton, Brackley and the many villages in between. The population is growing and local health services need to be developed to help support people to stay healthy and to care for them when they become unwell.

A recent study of local health issues analysed:

  • Lifestyles affecting health

  • The most common diseases and health problems

  • How people use health services locally

This study is being used to develop services at the Horton General Hospital; this work is the responsibility of the Better Healthcare Programme.
