Drugs and Alcohol Action Team

The Oxfordshire Drugs and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) is a partnership for agencies working in the field of substance misuse, including all local authorities. Treatment is commissioned by the DAAT and provided by a number of agencies, including NHS Oxfordshire and Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust through the “Shared Care” scheme.  This scheme provides treatment for heroin users in GP practices with medication available through community pharmacies.

The high quality ‘shared care’ service, where specialist nurses work in 16 practices in Oxford alongside GPs to tackle substance misuse, continues to be developed.

Key successes include:

  • More than 500 patients in shared care in Oxford city with only a small number in secondary care
  • DAAT received £1m additional funding for exceeding national targets for the number of clients in substance misuse treatment services
  • Our harm reduction strategy and services produced a substantial reduction in drug related deaths against a backdrop of national increase
