Children's Respite Nursing Team
Respite Nursing Care for Children with Complex Health Needs
The Children's Respite Nursing Team is a team of nurses working with the Community Children's Nurses. The team consists of registered sick children nurses and a play specialist. All the nurses have a wide range of experience in working with children and their families.
Who can we help?
The Children's Respite Nursing Team offers respite care in the home for children with complex healthcare needs We are guided by Oxfordshire's shared care protocols. Children must live in Oxfordshire to be eligible to receive care.
When is the service available?
From Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, however we try to be as flexible as possible and can consider occasional week day evenings. We may be able to increase respite if acute illness or crisis occurs. Sessions are normally three hours in duration, weekly or fortnightly.
What area does the service cover?
We cover the whole of Oxfordshire.
What can we offer?
Our team aims to give parents/carers a much needed break, enabling them to use this time for themselves and the rest of the family, secure in the knowledge that their child is being cared for by a nurse known to the family and familiar with their child's needs. Each child's care is planned specifically to meet the need of the individual child and family. The care given embraces the whole family, is flexible in its delivery and is led by the families' own wishes.
Working alongside the family this care may include:
- Giving periods of respite care in the family home
- Providing support and advice
- Providing play and stimulation sessions
- Giving support to siblings
- Providing specific nursing and symptom control
- Providing training for other carers (e.g. another family member, friend or voluntary carer), in order to increase the range and amount of support available
- Providing end of life care at home
We aim to work in partnership with the family and other professionals who may be involved in supporting the family.

Any healthcare professional can make a referral following discussion with the family.
