What do Primary Care Trusts do?

  • Develop primary care
Primary care includes all those health services we go to first when we need help – the family doctor (GP), optician, dentist or local pharmacist. PCTs bring all these professionals together in an “umbrella” organisation to plan and develop services, based on their own local knowledge of the needs of local people.
  • Provide community health services
PCTs employ district nurses, health visitors, therapists, specialist nurses, school nurses, hospital staff etc. to provide services within patients’ homes, at GP surgeries, at community hospitals or through PCT premises.
  • Commission health care services from NHS trusts and other health providers
Once a PCT has assessed the health needs of their local population, and undertaken a consultation it specifies what services are required to meet those needs. Then PCTs commission (fund) agreements with hospitals, NHS trusts and others to deliver those services with the resources available to the PCT as well as providing some services itself.
